Diabetes in Arab Countries

Study of IDDM among Arab children, who have similar genetic characteristics, but markedly different environmental backgrounds, could provide important insight into its cause. The incidence and prevalence of the disease are highly variable.

It is estimated that 15 to 20% of GCC nationals suffer from diabetes. But many may not know that they have it. The disease rates continue to rise both in adults and children. The disease prevalence among Qatari children has doubled in the past 10 years.

Less activity in Arab organizations, and eating Arabic food were associated with dysglycemia independent of age and BMI. Among women, acculturation was very low and was confounded with age and BMI as powerful risk factors for dysglycemia.

No association was found between physical activity, perceived stress, and the risk of dysglycemia in either sex.

The United Arab Emirates are witnessing a diabetes explosion, with approximately 19.5 per cent of the population now suffering from the disease.

The conclusion was drawn from statistics revealed at the Arab Health Congress Show by experts from Imperial College London Diabetes Centre. Diabetes is being recognised as a major problem in the UAE.

Further statistics reportedly show that 40 per cent of 60 plus residents have diabetes, and the disease causes 75 per cent of deaths amongst UAE nationals.

The medical and research director at the ICLDC, Dr. Taysir, reportedly commented: "Diabetes is currently the fastest growing debilitating disease in the world. In the UAE it is estimated that one out of five people aged 20 to 79 lives with this disease, while a similar percentage of the population is at risk of developing it. This year, the UAE ranked 2nd highest worldwide for diabetes prevalence."

Lack of acculturation is an important risk factor for dysglycemia in immigrant Arab Countries. Intervention programs aimed at diabetes prevention should consider the acculturation process.
