Sarawak still have the lowest number of diabetics in this country even if the case is being developed nationally, said Professor Emeritus Dato 'Mustaffa Embong, President of the implementation committee Diabetes Asia 2010 Conference and Workshop 9.
Statistics also show that urban populations are more vulnerable to disease, "he said.
In an exclusive interview with The Borneo Post last, and Professor Mustaffa described cases of diabetes in this country as "evil" and the epidemic stage.
He said that in the 1950's and 60's, diabetes is only one percent of the population.
"It has increased rapidly in the last decade to 17 percent today, and continues to increase," he said.
The disease is not reversible and the contract for genetic or lifestyle factors.
He said one reason for the increase in diabetes is that people are living longer, and through marriage, they passed the gene to their children.
On the other hand, some people are not in high-risk groups, such as they are not large, but contracted diabetes because of their lifestyle.
Professor Mustaffa also noted that another concern is that more than 95 percent of cases of diabetes in Pakistan is type II, even in children.
"They're younger. Not so much because of genetic factors, but they are overweight and inactive," he said.
Elaborating, he said no type I and type II diabetes.
"Type I frequently occurs in children and type II among individuals at higher genetic groups of type I. If the old type II, the children may be more likely to have diabetes type II as well," added Professor Mustaffa, who is also a member of equipment from the National Diabetes Institute (Nadi).
Type I diabetes treated with insulin injections and type II, oral medications are used.
"We can not cure diabetes. Once you have it, you have to live It is said that herbal medicine can cure .. But this does not happen. If not, I would be rich now," he said.
"The best way to prevent diabetes from getting worse and prevent complications are the purpose of treating people to prevent complications and prevent the worst .. worst case scenario is to die early, but if you treat yourself right, then you may live to old age."
The most important thing is for diabetic patients to change their attitude and stop doing things detrimental to their health, "he said. They must be very responsible for themselves and control their food intake, watch their weight control and exercise regularly.
"You can not become overweight or obesity would be difficult for insulin to work We insist on training. To lose weight medical help control diabetes, but drugs are not enough .. If we do not control diet and physical activity, diabetes will only get worse most of all ,. of a healthy lifestyle, not just the diabetes, but also to keep other chronic diseases from a distance, "advises Professor Mustaffa.
